Next step for thinking of my project is to work with metaphor. I plan on working with George Lakoff and Mark Johnson’s Metaphors We Live Byand I.A. Richards’ notion of dead metaphor as well as Fahnestock and Secor’s rhetorical stases. I will examine the application of a scientific metaphor (plate tectonics-geological theory of kinetic movement/shifting of the Earth’s surface) to illuminate compositional limitations and possibilities in what I am calling page techtonics, a theory of composition in unavailable designs, or areas of text shift/movement.
